In this experiential workshop, we offer support for psychotherapists doing meaningful clinical work during a time of intense social and political upheaval. Many therapists are feeling under-resourced—and at times overwhelmed—as we help clients cope with a daily onslaught of disturbing news and events while being impacted by the same conditions ourselves.
This workshop grew out of a paper by the presenters, Charlie Bowman and Peter Cole, written in the aftermath of the recent presidential election and scheduled for publication in an upcoming issue of Gestalt Review. The paper, “I Am Here: A Gestalt Perspective on Navigating Through Troubled Times,” introduces the concept of Mass Induction of Trauma: the deliberate use of authoritarian tactics to overwhelm the collective nervous system, disrupt embodied presence, inhibit reflection, and generate a pervasive atmosphere of threat and helplessness.
We will explore experientially how Mass Induction of Trauma affects both client and therapist, and we will introduce Gestalt-based methods to counter its impact and support ongoing growth and development.
Through embodied experiments, didactic teaching, case examples, and group integration, participants will gain practical tools for staying grounded and relationally connected in today’s challenging environment.
